Space exploration marked on Canadian banknotes

A new Canadian $5 note will begin printing later this year, depicting two famous space robots and an astronaut in what Bank of Canada governor Mark Carney said was a bid to highlight Canada’s contribution to space exploration.

The bill was unveiled, fittingly, on the International Space Station, by Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield, who has earned himself celebrity status thanks to his active twitter feed updated regularly from space. It features images of Canadarm2 and Dextre, two Canadian-built robots, as well as one space-walking astronaut in orbit over Earth.

The change in design comes at the same time as the Bank of Canada shifts is production methods from cotton to polymer, producing longer-lasting banknotes which can be recycled once they wear down. The Royal Canadian Mint is also currently working on its MintChip technology, a digital currency for transactions under $10.

The new $5 will be available in Canada from November 2013.
