Design: Classic sweets get a makeover for the high street

Design agency Elmwood have redesigned the wrappings for a number of much-loved British sweets, following a survey on their Facebook page to find which sugary treats the public missed the most.

Working alongside Brand Engage to drive the survey online, Elmwood launched their “Bring Back the Brand” campaign following the success of nostalgic treats such as Cadbury’s Wispa bar. The survey found that the great British public were calling for the return of Spangles, Willy Wonka bars and Toffos, which were all given a repackaging with up-to-date designs. Elmwood are currently approaching the appropriate companies to see if they can be brought back to UK shelves.

Duncan Walter, managing director for Brand Engage, said: “In order to build customer engagement, you must first find something that people are passionate about. The Bring Back a Brand campaign taps into a current trend for British nostalgia that has seen people use Social Media to lobby multinational companies to resurrect their favourite brands and products.”

The fact that over 8,000 people voted on the survey is a good indication that tapping into an audience’s personal demands is an effective method of grabbing attention and raising the profile of the company. It also makes these campaigns more unique – Elliot Wilson, Elmwood’s managing director, said of the strategy: “In times of austerity nostalgia can be a very powerful tool. It brings something very emotive for shoppers and a real sense of comfort. From a brand perspective this can be very influential and something brands can have a lot of fun with.”
